Panasonic outs its first pocket camcorder, new light model

Panasonic outs its first pocket camcorder, new light model

Panasonic in a special evening launch trotted out two camcorders, one of which is a first for the entire company. The Panasonic HM-TA1 is its venture into the Flip's home territory and immediately claims an edge with full-speed 1080p video. The camera is unique in the class as it supports Apple's iFrame encoding: it can output its video to iMovie at 540p without having to resize until the final export.

The camera still aims at the very simple control philosophy of its Cisco rival, but it can snap eight-megapixel photos or pluck individual frames from videos. It similarly wields a rare LED light for dark scenes and uses removable cards, up to and including SDXC. Electronic image stabilization and basic color presets produce more of the intended shot, and the camera can double as a webcam for live video in apps that support it.

Panasonic's First Pocket HD Camcorder

Panasonic's First Pocket HD Camcorder

Panasonic on Tuesday announced its first pocket HD camcorder, the Panasonic Panasonic HM-TA1. After some hands-on time, I found its most competitive feature was the fact that it doubles as a standard-definition webcam for use with Skype.

The Panasonic HM-TA1 records high-definition videos in 1080p at 30 frames per second using an MP4 codec (up to 12Mbps), so files are compatible for uploading to YouTube and Facebook. The body sports a two-inch LCD and writes videos to removable SDHC/SDXC memory cards. The rechargeable lithium ion battery is also removable and includes a separate battery charger. Like most all pocket HD camcorders, it lacks any optical zoom.

Panasonic HM-TA1 Web Camcorder Coming in August

Panasonic HM-TA1 Web Camcorder Coming in August

Panasonic finally caught up to the web camcorder craze. Check out the pocket-size Panasonic HM-TA1 here.

Well it looks like Panasonic has finally dusted off the blueprints for its Flip killer and put its pocket-sized web-friendly model in motion. Say hello to the Panasonic Panasonic HM-TA1, the company's pint-sized Full HD pocket camcorder. It's fairly odd to be debuting a camcorder like this at this point in the game though because the Flip camcorder has been on the market for close to half a decade. Then Sony followed the Flip with its Webbie line of camcorders while Kodak and a few other obscure manufacturers joined in as well. Panasonic is the first major manufacturer to release a pocket-sized web-friendly HD camcorder with retractable USB arm since Sony, and we can only imagine what Canon has waiting in the wings.

Panasonic Goes 3D With New Camcorder and G-Series Lens‎

Panasonic unveiled a slew of new Lumix cameras just last week, but the company wasn't quite done with its fall camera and camcorder announcements.

Today, Panasonic announced its first 3D high-definition camcorder for consumers (a pro-level 3D camcorder was showcased earlier this year) and teased a prototype Micro Four-Thirds system lens that will add 3D imaging capabilities to its Lumix G interchangeable-lens cameras.

Panasonic's new offerings also include the company's first pocket camcorder and an ultracompact HD camcorder, both of which shoot in plain old 2D.
